My iSeries model is not in the list

You can edit the models file manually by clicking on Systems | Define server models and then adding in the details of your server. We also periodically update this ourselves to include the new server models. You can download the latest models file from our website

Can I run both Snapshot/400 and Snapshot/TSC at the same time?

A change must be made to the SNAPSHOT user profile that is built when Snapshot/400 v8.x is installed. In some cases, the "Current Library" is set to SNAPSHOT for this User Id. To make the change, use a profile that has *SECADM authority and enter the following command on a command line:

CHGUSRPRF USRPRF(SNAPSHOT) CURLIB(SNAP70)

Back

Where can I get a Falcom Swing / Twist (SMS unit) from?

By going to the Falcom Website you can select a local distributor. The Falcom Swing unit has been discontinued and replaced by the Falcom Twist. It works in the exact same way so will work fine with Snapshot.

The Australian distributor for the Falcom products is Cellular Access which has the Twist for approx $350 ex GST:

Back

Server goes into MSGW every night about the same time

In almost all cases this is due to a system backup running and locking the files that Snapshot requires full access to. This can be solved by excluding the Snapshot library from your backup list.

PM400 data library growing too big

Please end Snapshot/400 (and or Snapshot/TSC) on the AS/400.

Please do WRKACTJOB and look at the QSYSWRK sub-system. Manually end the following programs : QYPSPFRCOL and QPMACLCT. These are the IBM performance collector programs. Both must be stopped using *IMMED. It is possible that QYPSPFRCOL is not active. In that case, just end the other program.

If you are not using IBM performance collection and there is no need to keep the performance data, you can clear both the QMPGDATA and QPFRDATA libraries. Use the CLRLIB command.

When Snapshot is re-started, the IBM programs you stopped will be started again. This also means data will be added to the libraries again. We are aware of this happening and are trying to find a resolution.

Snapshot/TSC Questions

How do I start the Snapshot subsystem manually?

   ADDLIBLE SNAPSHOT
CALL STRSNPSBS

Back

How do I get Snapshot to load after IPL?

You will need to put the following command into your startup program as referenced by the QSTRUPPGM system value.

 CALL SNAPSHOT\STRSNPSBS

How do I schedule a report?

First create a report. To do this you will have needed to create at least one template. Once you have your report test this within the Report Generator to ensure that everything is as expected.

In Windows XP (Most likely the same for previous versions of windows):

Go to control panel, Scheduled Tasks, Add new task, follow the prompts to add a new task, selecting Snapreptadv.exe in C:\Program Files\Mid-Comp International\SnapshotTSC\

Open up the advanced properties once complete and add the command line flag to the run command. eg

Run: C:\Program Files\Mid-Comp International\SnapshotTSC\Snapreptadv.exe /r allcpu.rgr

Everything was working fine but now it doesn't seem to be updating

For Snapshot to function correctly it needs to be run on an administrator profile on the PC. If this is already the case then it is most likely that the IBM Collection Services have gone into error.

Please do WRKACTJOB and look at the QSYSWORK sub-system. In this sub-system is a job called QPMACLCT. Select a 5 (Work with) for this job. Select option 10 (Display job log, if active or on job queue) then select F10 to display detailed messages. At the bottom of the log displayed (you may have to scroll) you will find a line that says something like "Program has stopped collection for *JOB".

If this is the case, manually end the following programs : QYPSPFRCOL and QPMACLCT. These are the IBM performance collector programs. Both must be stopped using *IMMED.

Please note that you must stop Snapshot first. When Snapshot is re-started, the IBM programs you stop (as above) will be started again.

IBM have released a couple PTF's to help with this known issue.

If the collectors continue to fail, try enabling the Re-start when stopped option within the Snapshot iSeries configuration screen.

Performance collection for CPU and/or Disk may be stopped
by the IBM Collection Services. The error returned will
be "Data not available". This is, in most cases, due to
data requested by Snapshot/TSC not able to be obtained
within an IBM calculated time limit. A resulting error,
internal to the collection API's, causes collections to be
stopped. The error, with a return code of 92, is
described in various IBM APAR's, although not specifically
for the API used by Snapshot/TSC.

This re-start option allows an automatic END and RESTART
of the IBM collection services. Please be aware that if
IBM is monitoring this system through Performance Manager
and supplies periodic reports on this system's
performance, you should NOT re-start when stopped. The
process used on the restart is to *END Performance Manager
programs *IMMED and then restart same. This process may
interfere with IBM's Performance Manager reporting.

Select "*YES" to re-start collection when stopped by the
error as described. Select "*NO" to NOT re-start
collection. Selecting "*YES" will result in a 'gap' in
data of approximately 10 minutes. Selecting "*NO" will no
longer collect CPU and/or Disk data until the IBM
Perfomance Collection is ended. Snapshot/TSC will then
attempt to restart the IBM Performance Collectors through
the collection API's. Default value is set to "*NO"

When I connect it says Version incorrect

You have upgraded either the client or the server. Both need to be running the same version.

Back

Why does my authorisation code expire when I have a permanent code?

Built into the code is a maintenance expiry date. You code will always work with all versions of Snapshot that have been released before the maintenance expiry date. This means that you are free to download and install any new updates providing you are under maintenance.

When you renew your maintenance you will be issued a new authorisation code.

Why are some graphs upto date while others are not?

The Capacity Planner is only available under a full authorisation code so you will need to purchase the product before you can use this feature. For a demonstration of the Capacity Planner please see your distributor.

How do I clear (purge) the PC data?

If you need to clear the data you have several options. Start by closing Snapshot.

  • To clear all the data for a system. Click on Systems | Setup systems. Click on the PC tab and then click "Clear Data".
  • If you only want to clear the data for a specific module, browse to the system directory within the Snapshot install directory. Eg. C:\Program Files\Mid-Comp International\SnapshotTSC\<system name>\ and delete the required directory. To delete all the disk data delete the DISK directory.

We recommend that you rename this directory instead of deleting it incase you still want to keep the data.

Note: The iSeries stores data for a specified number of days. When Snapshot re-connects it will re-download this cached data.

Back

How do I disable a module?

Click Tools | Manage Plugins and then deselect the required module from the list. Close and restart Snapshot. This will stop the module from loading on startup.

What does the daily seek percentages mean?

IBM Defines a "Seek" in this context as the number of times a disk arm travels from its current position to be greater than or less than part of the physical disk. IBM reports the seeks as follows:

  • Greater than two-thirds (2/3) of the disk
  • Greater than one-third (1/3) of the disk but less than 2/3
  • Greater than 1/6th of the disk but less than 1/3
  • Greater than 1/12th of the disk but less than 1/6th
  • Less than 1/12th of the disk
  • Zero (0) seeks

The graph, as presented, shows the (average) daily disk arm utilization. This will ultimately be used for calculation of Disk Processor utilization, Disk Controller time and average time for a disk I/O operation.

Snapshot Connection Error #100661

Check that you do not have a firewall blocking the connection. Check that you have the correct server IP in the Snapshot configuration

Back

User Index SNP601UI Damaged

Sometimes due to hardware problems, the LPAR can go down abnormally and damage one of the Snapshot objects. To resolve this problem, end Snapshot, delete the damaged object and then restart Snapshot. When Snapshot starts, it will recreate the user index.

Back

Snapshot is filling up disk space with journal entries

Ensure that you are not capturing any program running that adopts authority within your system.

Back

Snapshot always comes back with invalid password

This will happen if your system has a password level of 2 (User profile passwords with a length of 1-128 characters are supported). Create a user profile for Snapshot with an uppercase password that is 10 characters or less.
